Overview and Purpose

Civic Engagement Student Leads are integral to the mission of the Wesley Center for Spirituality, Service, and Social Justice, which reads:

 The Wesley Center is a student-centered space
where we find and cultivate belonging,
explore pathways to serve the common good,
and be the change we want to see on campus, in our community, and in the world 

Through these positions we are offering students a chance to help us shape Wesley Center programming and our  impact on Hamline’s campus and beyond.

Wesley Center Staff will offer mentoring and support to all Wesley Center Interns. 

All Wesley Center Interns are expected to act in accordance with Wesley Center/Hamline University’s mission at all times and to sign a Wesley Center Student Worker Expectations and Confidentiality Agreement. 

Primary Duties 
Main Location: Main Office of the Wesley Center, 318 Anderson Center

• McVay Youth Program Entry Level Associate (10-15 open positions): supervisor McVay Coordinator, Abby Norlin-Weaver
  An Entry Level Associate is a mentor to middle and high school youth in an after-school program. Student workers in this role provide assistance to the McVay Fellows in delivering homework help, large group activities, and building community for middle and high school youth. Associates function in a supporting role under the direction and supervision of the Coordinator and Fellows. All McVay workers are expected:
  • To be a mentor and role model to middle and high school youth.
  • Collaborate with team members to plan and lead activities for the McVay Youth program.
  • Help build a safe, fun, and caring environment for the participating youth to come to.
• McVay Youth Program Entry Level Associate (10-15 open positions): supervisor McVay Coordinator, Abby Norlin-Weaver
  An Entry Level Associate is a mentor to middle and high school youth in an after school program. • McVay Youth Program Fellow (1+ open): supervisor McVay Coordinator, Abby Norlin-Weaver
  The Fellow position is an opportunity for students who have previous experience working with the McVay Youth Partnership and are looking to grow their leadership skills. Responsibilities include:
  • Tracking attendance
  • Writing site reports
  • Planning activities and coordinating plans with other team members
  • Assisting with communication with site partners, youth and their families
  • Attending McVay Advisory Committee Luncheons (2 times per year) and Recognition Dinner- spring.
  • Attending church once yearly with our church partners Guiding, leading and teaching Entry Level Associates in trainings and throughout programming
  • To be a mentor and role model to middle and high school youth.
  • Collaborate with team members to plan and lead activities for the McVay Youth program.
  • Help build a safe, fun, and caring environment for the participating youth to come to.
• McVay Youth Partnership Van Driver (1+ open): supervisor McVay Coordinator, Abby Norlin-Weaver
  McVay Youth Partnership depends on van-certified drivers to provide transportation for youth and some staff to and from the site. A van driver may choose to do this in addition to an Entry Level Associate and Fellow positions, or simply be in the role of driving the van. Important information and  details for van drivers:
  • Be 19 or older and have a decent driving record
  • Bring copy of driving record to Hamline Public Safety
  • Complete an online training and test
  • Pass a behind-the-wheel test- (given only on Tuesdays)
  • They also get a one-time bonus of $50 after getting certified.
  • In addition to the hourly rate, drivers are paid $10 extra each time they drive for McVay programming. The additional payment is made at the end of the semester.
• Not Currently Open: Civic Engagement Student Leads for the Hamline Votes Campaign: supervisor Associate Director Nur Mood
  Hamline has historically had great success motivating students to vote. In 2016, Hamline was awarded Silver Status from the All In Campus Democracy Challenge. In 2018, Hamline University achieved a student voting participation rate at 63.3%, which was the highest in the nation among peer institutions. For that accomplishment, Hamline was recognized by the All In Campus Democracy Challenge with a Best-In Class award for overall highest voting rate and overall highest undergraduate voting rate at a private, 4-year college/university. Civic Engagement Student Leads for the Hamline Votes Campaign will lead this civic engagement initiative for the Hamline Community . The student leader will be serving as a member of Hamline Votes committee as well as tabling, welcoming current students and potential students and directing them to the best person to answer their questions. Student Leads also have the opportunity to develop critical professional skills needed to ensure a workplace can run smoothly. Student Leads serve as the first point of contact for all Hamline Votes campaigns and will also support the office of the Associate Director’s Civic Engagement projects.
  • Participating and assisting Hamline Votes Committee meetings
  • Provide yearly Voter Registration resources and general and midterm election resources to Hamline Community.
  • Completion of general office tasks, including copying, opening mail, and shredding as well as special projects.
  • Develop virtual and in-person community engagement strategies
  • Distribute brochures, yard signs, posters, and other Hamline Votes materials.
• Not Currently Open: Civic Engagement Student Leads for Hamline Connects: supervisor Chaplain Kelly Figueroa-Ray
  Hamline is committed to serve and civic engagement on campus, in our community, and beyond. The Student Leads serve as the co-presidents of the Piper Impact SALD student org. One co-president will focus on recruiting new and supporting current community and campus Hamline Connects partners. This includes researching new community partners, aiding in all campus and community partners with setting up their Hamline Connects web pages (including initial set up, training for volunteer check-in, and updating the site with volunteer opportunities). The other co-president will focus on encouraging Hamline students, staff, and faculty to volunteer through the site through meeting with various student orgs, tabling, meeting with division and department heads, and organizing volunteer/civic engagement fairs or other events/initiatives to increase civic engagement on the part of Hamline community members. Both presidents will support each other to help promote civic engagement through Hamline Connects and work to find ways to have it become part of Hamline’s administrative structure with the goal of having all Hamline volunteer/civic engagement opportunities assessed and recorded through this system.

Additional Role and Responsibilities

• Check-in via the Wesley Center Service & Daily Task Log and Google Chat Spaces
• Perform at least one form of weekly Wesley Center service as part of your position (this will be assigned, but you will have the chance to rate your preferences through the application process)
  1. Administrative and cleaning duties at the Wesley Center’s front desk in 318 Anderson
  2. Care for Food Resource Center (FRC) Satellite Sites, including meal delivery, refrigerator temperature recording, upkeep and cleaning of sites, etc.
  3. Support staffing for FRC (delivery days, front desk, stocking, cleaning, composting, shopping, etc.)
  4. Support Staffing for the McVay Youth Partnership (van driving, shopping, organizing and maintaining McVay storage, etc.)
  5. Organize cultivating belonging events that involve students across all Wesley Center programs and initiatives (MFA, FRC, Civic Engagement, SJSC, McVay, WC Outreach, and WC Communications and Operations)
  6. Care for Religious and Spiritual Life spaces, ritual items, and libraries
• In collaboration with the Wesley Center Communications Team:
  1. Work with the SJSC Student Interns to produce content for the Wesley Center and Department of Social Justice and Social Change Instagram feeds
  2. Produce content for 1 Wesley Center newsletter issue/semester (article, video, interview, photographs, poetry, etc.)

Qualifications

• Must be reliable
• Must have good communication and teamwork skills
• General commitment to civic engagement work on campus and/or, in our local community, and beyond
• Being able to work with staff advisors, community partners, and others involved in the internship work in a respectful and collaborative way
• All majors/minors encouraged to apply
• GPA of 2.25 or higher

Additional Qualifications for McVay Associates and Fellows:

• Ability to speak and write in multiple languages is highly desired
• General commitment to mentor, caring for and supporting youth, in our local community, and beyond
• McVay Fellows: Experience as a McVay Associate required to apply for this position
